Adding Yoga to Your Exercise Routine Helps Reduce Stress

General Health | Articles

Yoga has become one of the most popular exercise techniques here in the west, but its health benefits reach far beyond physical fitness. A recent report found Indian soldiers receiving daily yoga sessions to help them deal with extreme combat conditions while fighting Islamic militants. Officers claim yoga sessions better equip their soldiers to face constant danger and freezing temperatures by reducing mental and physical stress.

Constant physical and emotional stress frays nerves and often leads to depression that can have fatal results. Relaxing the body and mind is critical to the mental and physical health of the soldiers. Yoga is now a standard part of their training program.

Yoga originated in India as a group of ancient spiritual practices. Here in the west, yoga has evolved into a popular form of purely physical exercise. However, most yoga classes do combine physical exercises with breathing exercises and may include meditation.
For people with certain health conditions, including heart disease/hypertension, asthma, and back problems, the physical and mental characteristics of yoga make it an excellent form of exercise for both young and old.

The yoga techniques create relaxation which can help in regulating high blood pressure and improving resistance to psychological stress. For those suffering from back problems, studies have shown yoga helps improve strength, flexibility and endurance.

We know that taking big breaths during a painful situation can reduce pain by as much as 50%. We know relaxing techniques including yoga, Pilates, meditation and deep breathing have great benefits in reducing stress on the entire body and enhancing your well-being. Find one you like and just do it.
