Providing bright lighting conditions during the day seems to have a modest effect on sleep in people with dementia, results of a study published in the October issue of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society suggest.
“Sleep problems are particularly prevalent in persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, in whom circadian rhythm disturbances and fragmented sleep are nearly universal,” write Dr. Philip D. Sloane, of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and colleagues.
A significant increase in nighttime sleep was observed in subjects exposed to morning and all-day light. The increase was most prominent in those with severe or very severe dementia.

This article gives us further support of the benefits of light therapy on those with diseases and frankly the benefits to you and me. Is it the vitamin D that is increased with real sunlight in moderation everyday? We are not sure, but the evidence keeps moving toward prevention when enough and the right type of light hits our skin each day!
