A recent study out of the United Kingdom confirms that a diet high in fiber and antioxidant vitamins reduces the risk of Coronary Heart Disease, or CHD, and deaths from all causes in men. Women; however, appeared to benefit only from a high-fiber diet. The study was conducted by the University of Reading and looked at men and women between the ages of 40 and 59.
It is thought that that the stool-bulking properties of a high fiber diet play a role in the reduction of CHD and mortality. In addition, higher fiber fruits and vegetables contain higher levels of folate, the antioxidant-active flavonoids, and minerals such as selenium, magnesium, and copper. For men, vitamins E, C and beta-carotene had the greatest antioxidant benefit.

Can you imagine that just good healthy food can do so much for you health? I have had many patients come into the office for pain treatment and during that treatment we have recommended an anti-inflammatory diet which includes lots of fiber and higher amounts of anti-oxidants than the normal American diet. The most amazing things have happened. Some patients, working with their physicians, have been able to come off of high blood pressure medication, their triglycerides get better, their borderline diabetes becomes diet controlled and they lose weight. Then their pains lessen greatly and finally, many of the pain medications are dropped. Taking control of your own life is up to you! How you eat, think and exercise makes all the difference.
